Using our 40 years of experience working exclusively on Mercedes cars, including hundreds of 113s, we are currently half way through a complete bare shell restoration of the rarest of all Pagodas; A UK delivered, right hand drive, 5 SPEED (original ZF, not a conversion) 250SL. Since the 250 was only made for two years, they are few in number, especially in RHD and fewer still with the optional 5 speed ZF manual transmission. Probably less than 100 were made in this configuration.
The Mercedes Benz 250SL is revered for the fact that it retains a lot of cosmetic features from the preceeding 230SL but gained a power increase from the bigger 2.5 litre engine and was fitted with disc brakes front and rear.
We stripped this car back to a bare shell, had the shell acid dipped and electro-primed and then the shell spent exactly 12 months in our body shop being worked on full time. It was mounted on a jig, the brackets for which we had especially made so as to ensure absolute accuracy, and any and all rusted or damaged panels were either renewed using new original Mercedes Benz parts where available, or bespoke panels manufactured. Wherever necessary we also spot welded so as to ensure the tiniest details of correct construction methods were employed. During this process all of the dismountable panels were mounted and dismounted several times in order to ensure that the original specification for the panel gaps of 4mm was met. The shell is now better than new, having been treated with all modern anti-corrosion measures in far more detail than would have been applied at the factory and finished in the correct original colour of 568 Signal Red. The original interior in mushroom MB Tex could be re-used but in the absence of instruction from a new owner we will install leather in the correct colour. We’ll also install period correct headrests as a matter of principal.
Whilst the shell was being rebuilt we have stripped and rebuilt all of the mechanicals from the engine through transmission, suspension, brakes and rear axle.
She is now ready to begin her long reassembly journey which we anticipate will be at least 800 man hours and we are ready to talk to any potential new owner who is only interested in the best.
This car will be a show winner when complete.
