About this Mercedes-Benz W113

Colin Ferns Ltd is owned and run by Colin Ferns who is a Mercedes Benz trained technician and has been working on Pagodas for over 40 years. Arguably it is doubtful that anyone else has more knowledge and experience on these cars.

Many people seem to prefer the larger engined 250 and 280 over the 230 but in our opinion the 230 is the better of the three. The engine is much more willing and early examples had more in the way of chrome refinements which were later deleted in the interests of improved safety.

This 1964 ordered but 1965 delivered 230SL was bought as an unfinished restoration project; the car had been completely stripped to a bare shell, that shell was then acid dipped and electrophosphorescent primed.

The only rust found during this process was in the boot floor which was duly replaced with a new factory supplied panel. All other panels are original.

The shell was then meticulously seam-sealed and the underside was coated with Raptor epoxy sealant.

Next the shell was repainted in the original colour of 717 white. The hard top and wheels were also repainted in this colour as per the original build sheet.

Over 600 hours were then invested in rebuilding the car once it was painted. A new and correct style leather interior was installed in the original blue colour (although the original interior was MB Tex in this same colour) and period headrests added for improved safety.

A 5 speed manual transmission was installed during the rebuild and all of the 230 pieces of chrome were finished to show standard.

A period correct radio was refurbished and installed; complete with blue-tooth connectivity.

The original US style headlamps were replaced with new European spec ones.

The engine, transmission, final drive, rear axle, brakes and suspension were all rebuilt to “as new” standard with close attention to aesthetic details which are all too often overlooked or omitted in lesser restorations.

Custom labels were added to the speedo to reflect both MPH and KMH and the odometer was zeroed to reflect the all new status of every component.

The car has covered only road test miles since completion and has remained in the collection of the current owner who has never driven it.

Now offered to a discerning new owner at a fraction of the restoration cost.

Only for the serious collector!
